Shark Island is a beautiful place in Sydney. It is located off the Sydney Harbour and is a part of the Sydney Harbour National Park. The island is managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. The total area of this Island is 1.25 hectares and is capable of accommodating 500 people at one time.
The Shark Island is situated in a perfect location and the Sydney Opera House along with the Sydney Harbour Bridge can be seen from the island. The Shark Island with its picturesque backgrounds is an ideal weekend picnic spot and the facilities provided on the island are also ideal for such an exercise. There are tables and benches in the five picnic shelters along with open picnic tables as well. Bookings can me made for private functions on all days with the exceptions being on New Years Eve and on all Public Holidays.

The history of the Shark Islands dates back to approximately 120 years. Initially, this island was used for animal quarantine area and naval storage depot. It was also available for public recreation as well. This was however, done till the year 1975.

The other name for Shark Island is Boam-Billy, it is the Aboriginal name as well. The operating hours for this island is from 8.00 am in the morning till 6.00 pm in the evening. However, when the daylight saving process goes on then the operational timings change to 7.00 am in the morning till 8.00 pm in the evening.

The other facilities that are provided on the Shark Island are toilets, fresh water, electricity etc. There is provision for swimming as well. All kinds of Food and Drinks must be carried alongside as there are no shops on the Shark Island. There is ferry service available on Saturdays and Sundays from Circular Quay and the service works four times a day. Private vessels can be used as well, however prior permission is required for that to be done. Shallow waters encircle the island and as a result of that shipping is not possible at all in this particular area. Loud music is not allowed as there is a limit of 85 db(A). Cooking is not possible on the island hence it is always advisable to prepare as much food as possible before reaching the island. Equipments such as Marquees are allowed to be set up on the island but after being weighed and only if the island is reserved solely for a particular occasion.
